Julia and Edgar's Joint is a fantasy for me, a creative arts therapist working with psychiatric patients who often do not have good skills at socializing and interacting with others. A place like Julia and Edgars should exist all over the country, but especially in large cities like NYC. Higher functioning patients are just as vulnerable as seriously and persistently mentally ill patients. Even though many of my patients improve while on the inpatient units, they had no supports after discharge to maintain that improvement. This was equally true of high functioning patients as the lower functioning, more needy patients. I see a need to help the higher functioning patients (people with their own apartments, able to care for their activities of daily living independently, people in the workforce, who could pay their bills on their own). Julissa's Story I have been depressed since about the age of 12. Always. Even when I was having fun, it did not last or I found there was something not quite fulfilling. I have been in and out of hospitals for suicide and depression for 15 years. Today I am in a better place and I have accepted that taking medication is important, but therapy and medication alone is not enough. That's why a place like Julia and Edgar's is so important. Part of living a healthy life is enjoying life and being with other people. When I go to Julia and Edgar's I know some of the other patrons have been through what I have been through. I know I can have a conversation about some of my life experiences not only with the staff, but with the patrons too. Inspiration Sources 1. My first inspiration are psychiatric patients I work with. I have worked in psychiatry for over 30 years as a case manager and creative arts therapist. I have worked in outpatient treatment with the elderly, in a housing program with adults, and on inpatient units with children and adults. The typical inpatient psychiatric unit tries to prepare patient to return to their community, but there have been so many cutbacks for outpatient services for this poppulation. They need a lot of support and they are not getting it. Higher functioning patients especially get ignored causing them to fall through the cracks and then are in danger of becoming higher risk. 2.
